ELEANOR BYCZKOWSKI, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 15. She is the daughter of the deceased Sofia and Victor. She is the beloved adopted daughter of the late Ciotka Bronislawa Geniusz, dear sister of the late Lillian Byczkowski-Skourn and Michael Byczkowski,special cousin and friend of the late Stan Geniusz of Hamilton, Ontario. Eleanor is survived by the following : aunt of Judy Mizak (David) (nee Zellers-Byczkowski and great aunt of Theresa and Katherine Mizak of Las Vegas NV, beloved " aunty " Eleanor and cousin of Debbie, Chris, Charlotte, Greg and Ryan Sobolewski of Toronto, Canada. She will be dearly missed by her friend of over 60 years Sally Parrino. She was the beloved godmother of Elaine Flave-Novak (Thomas) and Adrienne Flave. Eleanor was an adventurous and fun-loving woman who was ahead of her time. In the 1950's and 60s, at a time when most women were encouraged to stick close to home, Eleanor fearlessly traveled by herself to Mexico, Central America and South America. Years later she traveled to Poland to learn about her Polish heritage and visit relatives. Eleanor was most importantly the sole bread winner of her family.Consequently she worked over 50 years, first for the New York Central Railroad and then for Conrail. Many times she was the only woman on the job, she persevered despite being harassed and often given difficult work assignments. Eleanor was a 1942 graduate of Case Western Reserve University with a degree in Psychology. She had a great sense of humor, always seemed to be laughing or smiling. Eleanor had an openness that children responded to. She loved to take the children from her neighborhood and her friends' children on trips around the city to broaden their horizons. She liked to introduce them to different foods , unfortunately these forays into new cuisines were not always well received. She was generous with her time, patient and never talked down to any child. Eleanor was passionately committed to the Slavic Village Community. She attended community meetings and wasn't shy about sharing her opinions. She endorsed candidates and volunteered her time on their campaigns. She was proud of her neighborhood, which she called home for over 90 years. Eleanor was a faithful friend, always could be counted on to help a friend in need. She was kind and generous. Many of Eleanor's friendships spanned decades. If Eleanor was your friend, she was a friend for life. The family would like to thank all the caregivers at Villa St. Joseph, Marymount Place and Crossroads Hospice. All of you were a blessing to Eleanor.
