Lydia V. Komocki (née Pokorny), age 77, passed away on 4/22/23 at home with the love of her life, David, by her side. Throughout those 77 years, Lydia couldn't stand people calling her "little." So what did this 5-foot-tall, incomparable woman do about it? She reached the pinnacle in absolutely everything she did. She made it count.Head cheerleader, All-City violinist and flutist, acrobat extraordinaire, math whiz, and a ball of energy, Lydia graduated from John Adams High School in 1964 and went on to study at Bowling Green State University. With a double major in Math and Spanish, she began her career as a teacher for Willoughby Eastlake City Schools. For nearly 40 years, Lydia dedicated her life to molding students into the very best versions of themselves. On March 9, 2006, the year of her retirement, Dave Anderson, Mayor of Willoughby–and former student–declared it Lydia V. Komocki Day to commemorate her achievements.David and Lydia would have been married 52 years on Monday, April 24. On that day in 1971, the Earth displayed all of her beautiful colors. It rained. It snowed. The sun shone down on her face and her bouquet of yellow tulips. Theirs was a traditional high school love story that was about to develop into a family of givers. David and Lydia taught their children Kirt (Megan), Chad (Kristin), and Marla (Nick), and seven grandchildren (Quinn, Paloma, Alice, Daphne, Nora, Olivia and David) how to always approach life with passion and courage. Lydia earned a master's degree from Kent State University, taught at KSU, and was an active member in Sokol Greater Cleveland, Delta Gamma Sorority, and the John Adams Reunion Committee. Somehow, she still managed to have time to iron all the clothes, have dinner ready, yet still be available to talk to you on the phone if you needed advice.Lydia's love of baking savory Czech houska and kolacky, pies and four-course meals, meant she could share her joy with others. There was always a seat and plenty of food at Lydia's table. There aren't enough character spaces in this column to express the profound impact this woman has made on the world.
