Michael James Callahan
September 5, 1939-November 3, 2026
Michael James Callahan, 87, of Cleveland, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at home with his loved ones. Born on September 5, 1939, in New York, Michael moved to Cleveland at 5-years-old, and made his life and family there. He had three sisters, Sally, Sheila, and Mary Ellen. Michael was a father of six children and a hard worker, who held many jobs in his career and served in the Army Reserves. He enjoyed playing golf, handball, and taping home movies of his family. He was a member of Holy Name Parish in Slavic Village, and loved helping throw the St. Patrick’s Day Dance at the church with his family. Papa Callahan spent his later years in life with his family making memories. He enjoyed being the family photographer, and making homemade popcorn. He was a yearly member of the Callahan Fantasy Football League, and is in first place at the time of writing. He loved Cleveland sports, and Notre Dame football. Papa was equal parts stubborn and humorous, and gave a mischievous smile during moments of reminiscing. Michael is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Margaret (nee Lally) Callahan and his loving children: Michael (Halyna Bednarchuk) Callahan, Christopher Callahan, Colleen (Rich) Carter, Patrick Callahan, Maureen (Randy) Schumacher, and Erin (John) Bogus. He will be dearly missed by his cherished 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis and Colette (nee Shearer) Callahan, his sisters, Sally Turner and Mary Ellen Anderson, and his son-in-law, Rich Carter. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects on Friday, November 6, 2026, starting at 12:00 p.m. at Holy Name Church, 8328 Broadway Ave, Cleveland, OH 44105.
